Prayer Walking Guide

What is prayer walking?

Simply put, it is praying while one is walking.  The Lord does not hear this method any more than another, but it does offer a few different opportunities.  First of all, the Lord’s presence is included in a daily activity.  Secondly, as one walks, there are visual prompts, like people and building, which can guide one’s prayer.  Thirdly, it opens up interaction within the community where one is praying.

Before prayer walking, humbly bow before the Lord in repentance to clean one’s heart and in submission to clear one’s mind to hear His direction.  It is not a one-way conversation.  Try to spend as much time listening as speaking to Him.  Be mindful of how the Holy Spirit may be directing one to pray.  As one listens well, there will be eternal relationships that will form and open doors for the Gospel.

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.  Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains.  Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.
Ephesians 6:18-20, NIV

Prayer Walking - Praying Up Our Church

Prayer is the life and breath of any church body if they desire to keep Jesus at the center.  The Lord will respond to the cries of His people (2 Chronicles 7:14) and will give the necessary direction for action.

Here are some suggestions as one would prayer walk around the church property:

  • Pray for the mission of our church to the neighbors and the different cities of the direction you are walking.
  • Pray for opportunities for organic ministry and church planting.
  • Pray for the leadership and church body.
  • Pray for the resources, both people and finances, to properly care for our ministries and our church properties.
  • Pray specifically and in faith.
  • Listen for direction and how you fit into the ministries of our church.

[Jesus] told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
Luke 10:2, NIV

Prayer Walking - Luke 10:2 Challenge within Our Communities

Not only do we want to pray specifically for those we encounter that they will know Jesus, but we can use Luke 10:2 as our base to challenge us to carry out the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20).  Here’s the base of our prayer:

  • Pray for the original passion of the early Church to win the lost.
  • Pray to plant a certain number of organic ministries and churches.
  • Pray that every person within our church body will lead someone to Christ each year.
  • Pray for the Lord to provide workers, including yourself, for the harvest.
  • Pray that the Lord will provide resources to plant churches.
